Comharchumann Chléire Teoranta
Cape Clear Cooperative was established in 1969 to administer the new electrical system on the island and to create employment through the development and support of fishing, farming and tourism. It is run under the ICOS rules structure and has a voluntary committee who are elected every year at the Annual General Meeting. It exists for the purposes of developing the island community and ensuring it’s sustainability.
Over the years the Co-op has developed significantly and administers the island Enterprise Centre for Údarás na Gaeltachta where its offices are situated. It manages other premises which house offices, childcare and hairdressing facilities, woodworking workshop and fuel services.
The Co-op provides many basic services such as fuel sales, including coal, gas, petrol and diesel. It provides building and construction services to islanders and others, including local authorities and State bodies.
The Co-op also administers some other businesses and activities including the Island Tourist Office and Craft Shop, Club Chléire, The Island Heritage Museum and the Island Bus Service. Colaiste Phobal Chléire is one of the Co-op’s main business activities. The Irish college is very important to the economic and social life of the island.
